How to go from the slopes to the surf in 24 hours in BC

British Columbia is a pretty special place. From the ocean to the old growth forests, to the towering mountains, every inch of this province offers something special – but on a recent work trip I had a chance to experience something truly special. I had a chance to go from surfing to skiing a day apart from one another. I wanted to share this itinerary with you in case this is on your bucket list.

Day 1: A travel day

The best ski to surf destination in Canada happens to be on Vancouver Island and so I needed to take a ferry to get there. The ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo is about an hour and a half and on a clear day make sure to head up to the viewing deck, you never know what wildlife you might find (I was once lucky enough to spot a family of orcas). Once I made it to Vancouver Island it was then another hour and a half drive to Mount Washington.

A little about Mt. Washington

It is Vancouver Island’s only ski resort. The resort is made up of 1,700 acres and 505 vertical metres of alpine terrain. And after a fresh snow dump there was lots of places to cruise through some fresh powder.  One thing that really stood out to me was the beautiful views – never before have I seen the ocean from the top of a mountain, and on the other side of the water a clear view of the coastal mountains in Vancouver.

Saturday: Ski day

I woke up early Saturday to a blanket of fresh snow. I loved getting in some powder runs and Mt Washington really has a diverse terrain. I was able to ski steep trees, groomed trails, and everything in between. I then lucked out with a blue bird afternoon and so I was lucky enough to see that breathtaking ocean view.

After a day on the hill I went for dinner at the local (and only evening food spot on the resort) Ted’s. The service was great and good pub food. They even have some weekly events like Music Bingo on Thursday’s and live music karaoke. It was a real fun vibe.

Sunday: Surf Day

A 3 hour roller coaster drive from Mt. Washington you will find the quaint and relaxed coastal town of Tofino. Before you get here though you pass through numerous microclimates; over snow capped mountains, through some of the world’s largest old growth forests, and eventually to the beautiful ocean.

A bit about Tofino

It is known as Canada’s surf capital. Located on the western edge of Vancouver Island within the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and part of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere. The natural beauty of this area is celebrated by all. From the whales that call the ocean home to the black bears found inside the Pacific Rim National Park. I have been here numerous times but every time the magic of this place feels new

Surfing in Tofino

I checked into my hotel at Long Beach Lodge, located right on the beautiful Cox Bay meaning the best surf waves were literally at my doorstep. On the property you will also find the Surf Club where I was able to rent all my gear (booties, hood and gloves included because it was -1 and calling for snow the day I went). And I met with my instructor Mikey.

It is really important to take a lesson or at least check the surf forecast ahead of time because the rip tide can be really strong and can carry you pretty far so you need to understand the best time to go out in the water based on your level.

We had a great day in the water (despite a snowy day on the beach). Thankfully there were some waves the right size for me – I think the locals call it whitewash. And seeing the beauty of Cox Bay on the horizon it made me forget about the chilly conditions (although it really wasn’t that bad in the wetsuit).

My favourite part though was the Apres Surf. After a day in the water I was able to warm up with cocktails, snacks, and a hot tub at the Surf Club. This is what dreams are made of.

To complete the trip I went out for a nice dinner in Tofino. I could write a whole blog on the amazing culinary scene in Tofino (I think I may just have to because the food here is soo sooo good). On this particular night I tried a new restaurant called Jeju. It is the first and only Korean restaurant in Tofino and on their website it says their goal is to share the food they used to make for friends and family with their guests. I was very impressed with the delicious food (perfect for sharing and trying different items). The friend chicken and tuna were top notch.

So there you have it, one of the few places in the world where you can go from skiing to surfing in 24 hours.

Topquilt Review: Making camping more comfortable

Since I moved out to B.C. I have been enjoying the great outdoors. I mean with the mountains and the ocean, how could you not want to be outside. Along with my new found love of exploring, has come a passion for camping. Before moving out west, I had never camped in my life and so I will admit it was hard at first. Learning how to pitch a tent, eating food out of a bag, going to the bathroom outside, packing light, and finding the right equipment.

One of the hardest parts was finding the right sleeping gear that would make the experience comfortable and enjoyable, but that was also easy and light to carry. I am a 29 year old female who is still relatively new to camping and hiking. The thought of carrying a heavy bag up the mountain petrified me. So I reached out to some experienced hikers, and some had recommended gear from Outdoor Vitals. I was pretty impressed with their selection, and decided to give their topquilt sleeping back a try.

After doing a bit of research, I found out that the founder of the company had one goal in mind, to lighten his pack and stay comfortable while in the backcountry. I trusted this brand right away because it came from someone that understood what camping is like and has experienced the difficulties of camping first hand. I knew this product was coming from someone who really understood camping and was excited to give it a try.

About Topquilt

This weekend, I took it on my first camping trip to Bowen Island and I really did love this sleeping bag. The three best features for me was the fact that it was super light but also durable, it was waterproof and comfortable, and that it could be used for multi purposes.

Extra lightweight

What I learned was hat this sleeping bag was actually originally designed as as hammock with an under quilt to cut the weight. It was extremely light and didn’t make my bag extra heavy. I was able to carry it up the mountain with ease and didn’t really have to stop for any breaks. It was also very compatible and easy to pack in my backpack.

Feels like a down

The second part that I loved was that it was really comfortable. As someone who definitely enjoys my down comforter at home, I had found it tough in the past to get a good night sleep while camping. From the noises of nature, to sleeping on the ground. What I loved about this sleeping bag, was despite it being really light weight, it is a pretty thick to sleep in. The company uses exclusive LoftTek imitation down that acts like an insulation. This is lighter and more compressible, but is still able to insulate even when wet because of the synthetic insulation. No matter what the weather is outside, stay warm, dry, and comfortable even when you are in the middle of the forest.

Since the camping trip, I have found so many other uses for the Topquilt sleeping bag. I take it with me to relax on the beach, for outdoor concerts and festivals, and for cottage weekends. It is so much more than just a sleeping bag for camping trips.

Your personal discount code

Now for the best part, if you use my Outdoor Vital code, you can get 10% off your order of a TopQuilt sleeping bag today. Just head over to their website and use the code “MIAWGORDON” at checkout and make your camping experience so much more enjoyable.

Get outside and enjoy the summer in comfort with the Topquilt sleeping bag. I know that mine will be getting plenty of use camping around beautiful B.C. over the next few months. I cannot wait to see what else there is to see, explore, discover in my new home.

Happy traveling my friends,

Mia goes M.I.A: Whistler B.C.

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler B.C. is an annual event that highlights some of the best local talent in music, photography, and film. It is one of the largest free outdoor festivals in the world. With the mountains still covered in snow well into April, the festival also offers some of the best spring skiing in the world. In other words, this is a must not miss event.

Last year I was fortunate enough to check out the festival and hit the slopes for some of the best skiing of my life. On top of that I fell in love with Whistler. It’s amazing restaurants, bars, and shops made me never want to leave.

Whether you are going for the festival, or just a trip to Whistler, the following are some of my recommendations of things to do, places to eat, and must not miss spots.

Must Do’s

Whistler is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The following are some of my recommendations of things to see and do to really appreciate what it has to offer

  • Take a road trip: I know that this isn’t in Whistler exactly, but one of my favourite parts of the trip was the drive from Vancouver to Whistler. The Sea to Sky Highway was breathtaking. You start off at sea level on the Ocean and then start the climb up into the air and mountains. There are such beautiful views along the way that I highly recommend leaving enough time to stop to take a ton of pictures
  • Shred it… Duh: Whether a skier or snowboarder, whether advanced or beginner, Whistler is the perfect place to hit the slopes. There are over 8,000 acres of snow covered slopes and more than 200 marked trails and hills that offer the perfect ski or snowboarding experience for all levels. Even skiing in April offered perfect conditions.
  • Take the Peak to Peak Gondola: I don’t care if you are skiing or not, you have to make your way on this Gondola. It takes you from the Whistler mountains to the Blackomb side and the 360 degree views are spectacular. I honestly felt on top of the world.
  • Relax and Rejuvenate at the Spa:  After a few long days of skiing, my body was begging me for a break. I did what any girl would do and hit up the Scandinave Spa. The location of the spa is stunning, surrounded by forrest and right on a lake. As for the spa itself, it was so relaxing and peaceful. No cells phones allowed so you can truly unwind. I recommend giving their baths a go!

Must Eat’s

After a long day on the slopes, you are going to be on a mission for some grub. Whistler has so many option of great places to eat and drink. From delicious family run bakeries, to upscale spots, Whistler has something for everyone. The following are some of my favourite places to grab a bite.

  • Sushi Village: Sushi Village came highly recommended and so I decided to give it a Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.43.39 PMtry on my fist night in town. What can I say, it exceeded my expectations. I am have been a fan of sushi my whole life, but this was by far the best I have ever eaten. With so many options on the menu, we decided to go with the Chef’s option, which is basically a surprise platter. Each maki and roll was so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend trying some of the house specials. My personal favourite was the hot volcano roll. You also have to try a sake margarita!
  • The Mexican Corner: We were told the margaritas at the Mexican Corner were the world’s best so how could we not give it a try. They were right. I gave the Mango Margarita a go, and for the first time ever the drink wasn’t overly sweet. On top of their delicious drinks, they also have amazing food. From authentic Mexican cuisine like civiche and tacos, to some very different options everything was so tasty. I highly recommend their Chile en Nogada. Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.43.56 PM
  • Purebread: Looking for a breakfast treat before you hit the slopes? Look no further than Purebread. This family run bakery has the largest selection of bread I have ever seen in my entire life. I ate an entire loaf of the olive rosemary. Soft and warm like it was straight out of the oven. And don’t worry, you will work off the calories on the hills.
  • Bar Oso: Looking for something a little more upscale? Bar Oso is the perfect place to wine and dine. One of the newer restaurants in Whistler, this Spanish style spot is incredible. From the ambiance to the food you are going to love it. Plus they have a really creative cocktail list. My personal favourite, the Powder Day.
Must Après

whistler3

Almost as important as hitting the slopes is getting your après on. The following are some of my favourite spots in Whistler to grab a bevy and unwind.

  • Longhorn Saloon: This might be my fav après anywhere. The location of this bar is absolutely perfect. Their patio’s view is of the mountains so you can watch all the skiers and boarders. Grab a beer, head outside, and enjoy the sunshine and live music. Just beware, the patio fills up fast. Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.44.17 PM
  • Garibaldi Lift Co. Bar & Grill: Also known as GLC, this is another prime real estate spot. Located below the GLC lift you get a perfect view. Their patio is open all year round so you can enjoy some fresh air while enjoying beers with friends.
  • Merlins: I have never seen a place like this before. It is famous for table top dancing and their insane nacho platters. Watch the game while enjoying a bevy. They also offer karaoke nights.

Whether you are going for the WSSF, a ski weekend, or just a little getaway, Whistler is a magical place. I fell in love with the laid back vibe, beautiful views, and challenging slopes. I highly recommend a visit. I would also love to hear any suggestions of places I should check out there next time.

Can’t wait to share the next place I go M.I.A
