There’s No Place Like Home: Whistler

My most recent trip to Whistler was pretty magical. It was early in the season, probably the second weekend the slopes were open. The night before we went up there was a huge snow fall. About three feet of fresh snow covered the mountains when we arrived bright and early. We were one of the first in line when the lifts opened.
We made our way over to the far end of Blackcomb and were literally the first run of the day. The sun was shining bright in the sky and felt warm on my face. Blue above and white below as my skies sunk into the fresh powder. I sped down the hill taking in the picturesque views along the way. From white covered trees to hidden creeks it was like I had the entire mountain all to myself. I could smell how fresh the snow was below me, and with the sun beating down it was actually the perfect day.

Where to stay

While it is pricier to stay in the Village I would highly recommend shelling out the extra dollars for the experience. You are closer to all the Apres parties, shopping, restaurants, and of course, mountains.
I also recommend that if you are a skier you will want ski in ski out access because trust me after a day on the slopes, the last thing you want to do is carry those skis while walking in those snow boots for a long time.

Budget Friendly
Pinnacle Hotel: This beautiful boutique hotel is right in the heart of Whistler’s pedestrian village and is seconds away from the mountains as well as fine dining and a bustling nightlife.
Luxury Stay
Delta Whistler Village and Suites: I felt like an absolute princess when I had a chance to stay at the Delta Whistler Village and Suites. From the beautiful newly renovated bedrooms to the 2 outdoor hot tubs and relaxing sauna this is the place to feel pampered for your entire stay.

Relax at the spa
The Scandinavia Spa Whistler is the perfect place to rejuvenate and recover after a hard day on the hills. The spa provides an age-old Finnish tradition of soaking in soothing outdoor baths, transitioning from hot water to cold. The unique spa is located in the forest and has breathtaking scenery. It is secluded and tranquil which offers the perfect relaxing environment.
Après Ski like a pro
You earned it. That cold beer at the end of a hard day on the hills. Reward yourself like the champ you are and find the best après spot in the village. Toast to a successful day.
Whistler Après Guide
  • The Longhorn: This is the après of après. Located right at the bottom of Whistler Mountain it is the perfect spot to grab a drink after a long day. The heated patio is the perfect spot to sit and take in the scenery. They also serve delicious nachosThe Longhorn is the most noticeable après mountain establishment in Whistler. Located right between Blackcomb and Whistler Gondolas in the Village looking up
  • Dusty’s: This is the original watering hole in Whistler. Located right at the base of Creekside Gondola, Dusty’s has delicious wings and Caesar to satisfy you after a long day.

Eat world class food

Sushi Village

Hands down my favourite restaurant in Whistler. It is located right in the heart of Whistler and is famous for its casual yet vibrant atmosphere. Eating here is an experience from start to finish. When we arrived we were asked to take off our shoes and sit on billows at a square table. You cannot go wrong with the sushi and I highly recommend trying some of the sake margaritas. My personal favourite is a mix of the strawberry and lime!

The Mexican Corner

In the mood for tacos and margaritas? This is your spot. It is a fun latin atmosphere that serves up some spicy authentic Mexican cuisine and some of the best margaritas I have ever tasted.  Choose from originally, strawberry, and mango. Trust me you cannot go wrong.

El Furniture Warehouse

I don’t usually like putting chains on here, but I love the Warehouse. Good food and super affordable it is the perfect place for lunch or dinner. I mean Whistler is expensive, so why not enjoy a full meal for $4.95. Plus there are daily drink specials to complete your dining experience and with a live DJ the party never stops.

Whistler in Pictures

Well there you have it. My guide to everything Whistler. This truly is a spectacular place that you have to see to believe. Whether an avid skier or not, this is a must do.

Happy traveling my friends,

Mia goes M.I.A: Whistler B.C.

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler B.C. is an annual event that highlights some of the best local talent in music, photography, and film. It is one of the largest free outdoor festivals in the world. With the mountains still covered in snow well into April, the festival also offers some of the best spring skiing in the world. In other words, this is a must not miss event.

Last year I was fortunate enough to check out the festival and hit the slopes for some of the best skiing of my life. On top of that I fell in love with Whistler. It’s amazing restaurants, bars, and shops made me never want to leave.

Whether you are going for the festival, or just a trip to Whistler, the following are some of my recommendations of things to do, places to eat, and must not miss spots.

Must Do’s

Whistler is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The following are some of my recommendations of things to see and do to really appreciate what it has to offer

  • Take a road trip: I know that this isn’t in Whistler exactly, but one of my favourite parts of the trip was the drive from Vancouver to Whistler. The Sea to Sky Highway was breathtaking. You start off at sea level on the Ocean and then start the climb up into the air and mountains. There are such beautiful views along the way that I highly recommend leaving enough time to stop to take a ton of pictures
  • Shred it… Duh: Whether a skier or snowboarder, whether advanced or beginner, Whistler is the perfect place to hit the slopes. There are over 8,000 acres of snow covered slopes and more than 200 marked trails and hills that offer the perfect ski or snowboarding experience for all levels. Even skiing in April offered perfect conditions.
  • Take the Peak to Peak Gondola: I don’t care if you are skiing or not, you have to make your way on this Gondola. It takes you from the Whistler mountains to the Blackomb side and the 360 degree views are spectacular. I honestly felt on top of the world.
  • Relax and Rejuvenate at the Spa:  After a few long days of skiing, my body was begging me for a break. I did what any girl would do and hit up the Scandinave Spa. The location of the spa is stunning, surrounded by forrest and right on a lake. As for the spa itself, it was so relaxing and peaceful. No cells phones allowed so you can truly unwind. I recommend giving their baths a go!

Must Eat’s

After a long day on the slopes, you are going to be on a mission for some grub. Whistler has so many option of great places to eat and drink. From delicious family run bakeries, to upscale spots, Whistler has something for everyone. The following are some of my favourite places to grab a bite.

  • Sushi Village: Sushi Village came highly recommended and so I decided to give it a Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.43.39 PMtry on my fist night in town. What can I say, it exceeded my expectations. I am have been a fan of sushi my whole life, but this was by far the best I have ever eaten. With so many options on the menu, we decided to go with the Chef’s option, which is basically a surprise platter. Each maki and roll was so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend trying some of the house specials. My personal favourite was the hot volcano roll. You also have to try a sake margarita!
  • The Mexican Corner: We were told the margaritas at the Mexican Corner were the world’s best so how could we not give it a try. They were right. I gave the Mango Margarita a go, and for the first time ever the drink wasn’t overly sweet. On top of their delicious drinks, they also have amazing food. From authentic Mexican cuisine like civiche and tacos, to some very different options everything was so tasty. I highly recommend their Chile en Nogada. Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.43.56 PM
  • Purebread: Looking for a breakfast treat before you hit the slopes? Look no further than Purebread. This family run bakery has the largest selection of bread I have ever seen in my entire life. I ate an entire loaf of the olive rosemary. Soft and warm like it was straight out of the oven. And don’t worry, you will work off the calories on the hills.
  • Bar Oso: Looking for something a little more upscale? Bar Oso is the perfect place to wine and dine. One of the newer restaurants in Whistler, this Spanish style spot is incredible. From the ambiance to the food you are going to love it. Plus they have a really creative cocktail list. My personal favourite, the Powder Day.
Must Après

whistler3

Almost as important as hitting the slopes is getting your après on. The following are some of my favourite spots in Whistler to grab a bevy and unwind.

  • Longhorn Saloon: This might be my fav après anywhere. The location of this bar is absolutely perfect. Their patio’s view is of the mountains so you can watch all the skiers and boarders. Grab a beer, head outside, and enjoy the sunshine and live music. Just beware, the patio fills up fast. Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 2.44.17 PM
  • Garibaldi Lift Co. Bar & Grill: Also known as GLC, this is another prime real estate spot. Located below the GLC lift you get a perfect view. Their patio is open all year round so you can enjoy some fresh air while enjoying beers with friends.
  • Merlins: I have never seen a place like this before. It is famous for table top dancing and their insane nacho platters. Watch the game while enjoying a bevy. They also offer karaoke nights.

Whether you are going for the WSSF, a ski weekend, or just a little getaway, Whistler is a magical place. I fell in love with the laid back vibe, beautiful views, and challenging slopes. I highly recommend a visit. I would also love to hear any suggestions of places I should check out there next time.

Can’t wait to share the next place I go M.I.A

Mia goes M.I.A: Blue Mountain Resort

img_0693

After living in the Southern United States for seven years, returning to the cold winters of Canada wasn’t an easy task. For the first few years, I decided to hibernate from November until May, however this year I made a pact to myself to get out and enjoy winter, starting off with a weekend getaway to Blue Mountain Village and Resort.

Blue Mountain is just a short two-hour drive from Toronto, making it the perfect weekend destination to escape the city. The ski resort has 42 runs accessible from 16 different chairlifts there are slopes for all different levels. When your legs are tired from the day on the hills, there is an adorable European style village to get some shopping done, or find a spot to sit down for Après. There are also several hotels and cottages in the area to stay and get your zzz’s.

What to do:

On my recent trip to Blue Mountain I arrived bright and early to make sure I would get a full day on the slopes. I really wanted to check out all the sides of the mountains. I even dared myself to go outside my comfort zone and try some double black diamonds.

After one tumble it was time to take a time out. It is a ski tradition of mine to stop a hot chocolate break. I made a stop into Bullwheel Pub. This pub is the only one located on the South end of the mountain and offers a beautiful view of the slopes. The rustic deco makes you feel like you are inside a cabin.  It offers delicious Canadian comfort food. I had the chicken fingers and mac and cheese along with my hot chocolate.fullsizerender-5

After a full day of skiing and some sore muscles, it was then time to relax at my favourite après spot, Rusty’s at Blue. Rusty’s is located right at the base of the slopes in the village. It offers a beautiful view of the mountains and live music in the afternoons and early evenings which offers the perfect atmosphere to unwind with a beer in hand.

Next it was time to shop until I dropped. The Village at Blue Mountain has so many unique stores, boutiques, and even candy shops. My personal favourite spot is Red Devil Sports. They have so many vibrant outfits, that is where I got my favourite ski jacket.

After dropping off all those bags, and a delicious dinner (you can find my favourite spots for food under where to eat) it was time to put the dancing shoes on. I went to check out Twist Martini Lounge Bar and absolutely loved the elegant interior, delicious cocktails, and amazing DJ that had me moving all night long.Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 6.56.48 PM.png

Day two of the weekend I needed some serious R&R after all the skiing and dancing, and so I made a trip to the Scandinavian Spa. The spa is located just a shot 10-minute drive from the mountains and with big trees surrounding it, it is very secluded and tranquil. I arrived early to make sure I would have a spot in their famous baths. Basically you rotate from hot to cold baths which is meant to cleanse the body and get blood circulation going. I must say I felt surprisingly energized afterwards.

Where to Eat:

The Village is packed with amazing restaurants for all taste buds but the following are a few of the spots I really enjoyed on my recent trip.

After a full day of skiing, my legs were exhausted and I didn’t want to venture far from the hotel, so thankfully there was Oliver and Bonacini Café and Grill right in the lobby, and what a teat it was. The restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a beautiful view of the village. The food was delicious to say the least. I absolutely loved the Miso Glazed Salmon.

The following day for lunch I was craving more of a carb loaded meal to say the least, and so I made a stop into Firehall Pizza Co. I absolutely loved the decoration, modelled after a Northern Ontario Firehall. The menu itself was a pizza lover’s dream. They had everything from the Sexy Texy Mexy (a Mexican style pizza) to the Meat Head (self-explanatory) creative and delicious.

For the last supper I decided to go Greek and give Tholos a try. The restaurant was so beautifully put together. It really transforms you to an ancient Greek ruin. I love the interactive experience this restaurant has to offer, from dancing and traditional plate smashing. And of course the food is delicious. I personally love the Stuffed Florina Peppers.

Where to Stay:
Screen Shot 2017-02-18 at 7.03.20 PM.png

If you are looking to stay in a luxury hotel for the weekend, the Westin Trillium is the place to be! I had a beautiful room that overlooked the skating rink, village, and the mountains. There was so much space and a fireplace to warm me up after a day on the slopes. The hotel really payed attention to detail, from their custom made soaps and shampoo, to bed side mist supposed to help you sleep better. The bed was heavenly. In fact, this was probably the most comfortable hotel I have ever stayed at. Besides the incredible lodging, the hotel has so much to offer, including their own mini spa, with two hot tubs and a heated swimming pool, perfect after a long day of skiing.img_0729

I think the whole experience at Blue was an eye opener for me. I realized that Canadian winters can be enjoyable if you embrace it. Secondly I learned that Ontario has so much to offer. Having had the chance to ski at Whistler last year, I was very impressed with what Blue Mountain had to offer, from the ski experience, to their village, to their nightlife. I will definitely be making a trip back there soon, and I hope you will as well!
